Sugarmill Woods, Florida has a small population of just over 8,000 people, but it is a community that is growing. While the population isn’t significant, the degree of growth is and that has a lot to do with the community being young. It was created in 1972 as a residential area that incorporated “wildlife strips” in its planning. It was the first residential area in the country to exercise this type of wildlife-residential integration.
Furthermore, the Sugarmill Woods area is made up of three Property Owners Associations. These associations make activities available to the residents. What makes this community unique over many towns and cities throughout Florida is that the residents work together to establish a good quality of life.
If you are looking to live in a quality community with upscale housing, this is a very quaint community that has a strong focus on quality rather than quantity. It is this principle and the management of the community that makes it a very pleasant place to live. It is clean and close-knit.
What to Do
There are a number of activities in Sugarmill Woods. Golf is, perhaps, the most popular. Cypress Village is one of the courses in the area with nine holes that surround the Cypress Village Center. Cypress Village Center is where the Sugarmill Woods Country Club is located. Members of the Country Club can enjoy tennis, swimming, and a great meal at the in-house restaurant. For serious golfers, they can shop from the club’s pro shop.
For those that like to exercise, Oak Village Center has a 24/7 fitness center that contains grass and clay tennis courts and a swimming pool. If you want tennis lessons, you can take them here. If tennis isn’t your thing, then the Southern Woods Golf Club, a privately owned club, has much of what the Sugarmill Woods Country Club does.
At various points throughout the year, the two Country Clubs sponsor dinners for members and guests. Factor in the Shoppes of Sugarmill Woods and you have a variety of shopping opportunities to go with the events and dining options.
If you are looking for more to do, Sugarmill Woods is close to the Chassahowitzka River Campground and the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. There are a number of activities in these areas to enjoy, especially if you are a nature lover or what to see animals in the wild. You can see even more at the Citrus Wildlife Management Area.
But, of course, there is the fact that Sugarmill Woods is close to the Gulf Coast, which means beaches and Pine Island is the perfect place to enjoy the sea and some sand. It’s just a short 32-minute drive.
